Hi, I have a John Deere 240 skid steer that runs fine, but on occasion, it will accelerate to a higher rpm without input. It will even happen at idle. The tachometer shows an increase of about 100rpm. It will usually slow back down within a few seconds. Twice yesterday, it accelerated and kept running high to the point where I had to pull it down manually. Has anyone experienced this? Also, I hear a kind of knocking noise when this happens. Any guesses on what might be causing this? Thanks. - Chris

It sounds like a fuel delivery issue. Check if the fuel filter is clean and the fuel lines are free of obstructions. A clogged fuel filter can cause irregular engine performance.

Make sure to inspect the throttle linkage and governor settings. Sometimes these can cause sporadic behavior if they are out of alignment.

It could be an issue with the governor spring. If the spring is weak or broken, it might lead to higher RPMs unexpectedly.

I've had a similar issue with my JD240, and it turned out to be an air intake problem. Check for any blockages or leaks in your air intake system.
