I had the same issue with my JD 320D. I ended up replacing it with a Perkins engine. Cost me a bit, but it's been running great for over 2000 hours now.
I second that. Perkins engines are a solid choice. I would also recommend Yanmar if you're considering a swap, they have great reliability as well.
I’ve heard similar stories. It’s unfortunate that John Deere went this route with the 320D. They should have considered the life expectancy and rebuildability for such a widely used piece of machinery.
Thanks for the heads-up. I was about to invest in a JD 320D, but now I'll look for alternatives or consider an engine swap from the get-go.
This is one of those design choices that baffles me. Making engines that can't be rebuilt seems like a step backward in terms of sustainability and cost-effectiveness.
