Best Practices for Oil In Dry Clutches On A D3c

Yair . . . Don't know the tractor but if it is not gear oil from the FD it could be coming from the boost circuit . . . the machine most likely has hydraulic brake and/or clutch assist.Cheers.

I dont have a clue, Have the blade off the front to replace the bushings and pins. I will put new bolts in the botton where I too them out of and adust the brake bands. When I get it back together will use it and check and see it fills up again.I just got the dozer and never used it just unloaded it off the trailer and into the shop. Figured I had all winter to play with it in the shop.Everything I look at I take apart. cat price for new self aligning bushings and pins and spacers are nuts. I sent the angle cylinders and the tilt cylinder out for seals since I had the off. The price I thought wasn't too bad 425.00 for all three. Have to replace the steel lines in the c-frame there all rotted away. Have to make then my self, again cat wants your first born and a open checkbook..

Final drives or bevel gear? Bevel gear has a dipstick to check level. Only other place could be the lines for the steering clutch cylinders which comes from the trans. and it has a dipstick. I had signs of oil (and water) in the right hand side of my 931B and I think it may have come from a burst hyd. line that goes along the side of the steering clutch compartment. I've read a few times that D3's were known to leak into the clutch compartment.

Tried to adjust the right hand side the Band adjusting nut would just spin, tried clockwise and counterclock wise. No nothing there. Took the cover off for the brake apply rod. There was no bolt or nut on the brake adjustment sleeve. Number 19 and 20. Now comes the trick to get a bolt and nut and tighten them inside where they are. Without taking off the top cover.Took photos of the springs, both sides are broken. I did replace the selfaligning bearings for the two angle pistons and the tilt piston. The rear window was not there when I got it. Ordered a new one from Cat OUCH..

How high should the grouzers be. Here is a photo of my pad.

Looks like your grousers are pretty worn, but they will still work so long as the chains are not stretched to far. How are the pins and teeth? Also see some issues with your springs showing there starting to bow. Need to see why there in that position, something is cracking or real worn.Edit: Never mind you said they were broken

I don't have the exact measurement , but the grouser should be about 2" from the pad to the straight edge. One thing I noticed the pad looks thin , which makes it easier for them to bend if your on a lot of rocks. Is this the tractor that sat for years?

Was there no silicone on the brake cam you took off or have you cleaned it already? I think it will be impossible to replace the brake adjuster nut and bolt without taking the cover off but the good news is taking the cover is a piece of cake. If you have to pull the steering clutch is more of a pain. Taking the cover off could give you an idea where the oil is coming from. Adjusting the brake band and seeing if it will still leak is a waste of time. Find out what the problem is and fix it or you'll end having a bigger mess to deal with later on.

Yes thats the tractor that sat for years. hr meter says 1363 hrs. Probably has 100,001,363 hrs.Had to take the top cover off to get the #19 and #20 bolt and nut on. The brake band looks to me like there is pleanty of meat left on it. Was just going to pull the clutch and brake band out, But I have to remove the cab to do it. so I will pass this time. If the clutches ever slip then I will pull the cab off and do it all.Pulled the bottom plug out after having to weld another nut on the botton. Out came mostly water and muck. It looks like the bevel gear seal is fine and I put a camera down between the clutch pack and the final drive and did not see any leaks.

We had 3c many years ago that we had to pull the clutch and brake packs out replace them, we went back and converted them to oil bath packs. Cat has a detailed service bulletin on the process, biggest difference was that the lining material was different. Scrub puller is right that it has hydraulic assist clutch packs, it is sealed with a quad ring and a back up ring that has always been prone to leak. If the bevel gear seal goes to leaking, you'll get probably quite a bit of 30 wt oil in that case, doesn't look like thats the case. If the Final is leaking to the inside, its gear oil, dang stinking stuff. Another thing we found is that the C steering clutch is sealed up pretty tight and as operating cycles heat and cool the case, it is prone to condensation processes and it will sweat more water than what you would think. The solution to that was to drill and tap a hole in the top of the case and put a breather vent in it. I wish I could remember the TSB numbers, thats been several years ago and too many machines past. Hope this helps......

Grouser height new is 1.86". 100% worn @ 0.76". Original pad thickness is 0.33".Great pictures, keep them coming.Only three sources for oil leak back there....bevel gear shaft seals, steering clutch booster and final drive pinion seals. Doesn't look like any of them are the culprit. How old would you say the leaked oil is? maybe from a prior event?

Put anti-seize on the band support on the bottom and remove it every few month's to drain any moisture. Have heard of some people just leaving the band supports out but I don't think that's a good idea. That still looks like a clean machine. I don't think the hour meter has gone around once, 10,000 hours.

Should be a separate drain plug for the steering clutch compartment.

Do you measure the grouser height from top of the pad or totoal height from under the pad. Thanks

We have the dozer sitting on 4 jack stands. Today I am going to clean out the hole where the clutch and brake sits. Then we are going to run the dozer and see if it leaks anywhere. I think I will pull out the clutch cylinder first and replace the seals and meybe make a new steel line going to it. All depends how busy I get in the shop today. It nice working on it in the garage heat and a concrete floor.
