Which Engine

Best Practices for Which Engine

Your machine has a 315. Cat switched from the 4400 to the 315 for the 1947 production year and used it all the way to 1959. Pretty easy to find a original Caterpillar 315 manual on e-bay. Just look for a few days. They pop up real often.Incidentally the older D4400 engine used the same block for both the diesel and the early R4 gas models. The internal and external parts did differ.

The knowledge on this site never ceases to impress me. Thank you

Can you believe it I just went on SIS and they don't have anything for that model! Here I thought Cat supported their equipment

True you can find things that way and if you have the engine right in front of you to compare to what is is SIS it helps.Heck you can just input D315 and it will show the marine version of that model and for some parts that might be good enough.Problem is I would hesitate to depend on those parts being all the right parts for a D47U 7U16081. Plus the original poster was looking for a "repair manual for a rebuild", and last I could find on SIS, they don't show the service manual information for even the 955 12A loader. If you know a place on SIS to find that let me know for future reference!

Okay, but it's not in SIS.https://www.cat.com/en_US/support/maintenance/service-manuals/service-literature.htmlI didn't know that there were others like the marine version of the D315 listed in SIS. I do know that if you want the true copper version of the precombustion chamber seal, that the marine type are still available from Cat for the D315. That is a big reason that I buy older Cat equipment to use...you can still get parts for them!A lot better place to find them is on Ebay if you want it fast, even though they have gotten more expensive over the years.https://www.ebay.com/itm/CAT-CATERP...khbx6fV:sc:USPSPriority!70458!US!-1:rk:7:pf:0https://www.ebay.com/itm/Caterpilla...=item3d6792bcf8:g:WWwAAOSwSK1bEUqn:rk:19:pf:0https://www.ebay.com/itm/SBF2-Cater...h=item3fb86857c1:g:wnkAAOSwnuJcT76h:rk:5:pf:0

Oil pump, oil pan is internally different, governor, injection pump settings, water pump and front engine arraignment, etc, just to name a few.

Plus the 12A is oil clutch.
